SHRI K.P. MOHAN (DHARMAPURI): Sir, the passenger facilities such as boarding,
halt, etc., had been abandoned at Mettur Railway Station in Dharmapuri
district falling under my parliamentary constituency about six years back. Now
this station is being used only for the benefit of goods trains, depriving the
benefit to the people of the area.
Mettur is a municipal town having a sizable population. And it is an industrial town too having several textile, steel, chemical units etc. Majority of the population of the Mettur and its surrounding areas belong to working class community. Since the passenger facilities at Mettur Railway Station has been closed, the people of this area have to undertake journey by road involving about 45 kilometres to catch trains for other destinations at Salem. The people of this area are facing great hardship on account of the closure of Mettur Railway Station for passengers. Therefore, I urge upon the hon. Railway Minister to direct the concerned to restore the Mettur Railway Station for the benefit of passengers of the said area.
