XIII LOK SABHA DEBATES, Session II (Winter Session) Thursday, December 23, 1999/Pausa 2, 1921 (Saka )

Type of Debate: MATTERS UNDER RULE- 377
Title: Need to take suitable measures to make West Dinajpur Spinning Mill in West Bengal viable.

SHRI PRIYA RANJAN DASMUNSI (RAIGANJ): Sir, West Dinajpur Spinning Mill is a Government of West Bengal undertaking in my constituency headquarter Raiganj, which is suffering for lack of marketing of their yarn and regular supply of raw materials. While the yarn market is very vast, a National Handloom Corporation can have a negotiation with this unit for bulk buying of the yarn and to stabilise the functioning of this unit. Several machines remain unutilised for not having the full production capacity. In the interest of the workers, Government of India, Ministry of Textiles, should negotiate with Government of West Bengal Industry Department (Small Scale Industry) to find appropriate approach paper for strengthening this unit and to make it more viable and strong yarn production unit of North Bengal.

Uttar Dinajpur District being a backward district, can further receive attention of the Textile Ministry for handloom cooperatives and other handloom activities at Panchayat level where this industrial unit can contribute immensely for the supply of yarn. Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur have enough skilled weavers to make handloom sarees, other garments specially at Raiganj, Hemtabad, Kaliaganj and Gangarampur. This industrial unit would serve as a catalyst for supply of various yarns for the requirement of the handloom industry. Minister of Textiles, along with the Minister of Small Scale Industry, Government of West Bengal should visit this unit at the earliest and support the backward District of Uttar Dinajpur and its potential for handloom based cooperative and industry.

MR. SPEAKER : Now, we take up introduction of Bills.
